The Oscars of Porn

Pornography has existed for as long as there has been a medium able to easily transmit it, which means hundreds of years. Since the advent of photography, porn has steadily become a large enough industry to warrant awards and recognition for the actors, actresses, and crew that produce their content, much like that of the Oscars or Emmys. Now, pornography may be something spoken about in hushed tones in our daily lives, but there are events where the crowds gather in public to honor the men and women that bare it all.

The History

First held in February 1984, the AVN Awards are sponsored by Adult Video News, and currently seems to be co-sponsored by Fleshlight, the male sex toy manufacturer. More importantly for the AVN Awards, is the fact that they’re often called the “Oscars of porn”, which gives them a place of honor among the community. The AVN Awards are covered on Showtime with a 90 minute time slot each year and compare very well to the Oscars due to the fact that they have nearly 100 categories, with very specific designations for Technology, Production, Performer, Sex Scene, Specialty, and Marketing.

Web and Technology AwardsTory Black AVN night

While most of the glory goes to the actors and actresses that perform on film, there are, of course, the companies and websites behind the faces of the illustrious stars. Websites are today’s fastest moving medium, and that should be honored just as much as any other aspect of the industry. Here is a walkthrough of the past few years of Web and Technology awards for the fine sites that put out all of the great content that we know and love.

AVN and the Web

Pleasure

Avn awards logoAVN has a long history itself, as a company, and it’s website shows that quite well. The main page a good look at the big news in the industry of pornography. There is a section for the Top Stories of the Day, the front and center square cycles through tiles that link to articles or other forms of media that they feel is important. Below this, there are areas for Company News, Movie releases that commonly feature trailers. That isn’t all they offer, though. They have galleries, Pornstar of the Day, Movie and Website Reviews done by their knowledgeable writers, and retail charts for both rentals and sales.

Business

That is only the “Pleasure” side of their site. The second is business, focusing solely on news related to keeping content in production. Here they post articles mostly in a legal or technology news. With the amount of legislation that has been reaching it’s hand into the lives of stars and producers, keeping an eye on this news is a very good idea.

VOD – Video On Demand

That’s right, they have plenty of videos ready to watch or even Download to Own. They let you search by Title, Star, Studio, etc or you can Browse by Category to find exactly what you want. Essentially, you can find anything you might want. Each category has a page that allows it’s users to easily find Featured and Top Studios. You can even get a free 15 minutes special or choose packets by the number of minutes that you want to be able to watch, on a scale from 15 minutes to 1000 minutes. They are also available for the Roku device, that plugs directly into your TV.

The best possible sponsor for the industry awards.

News is incredibly important to our modern world. It’s used to organize and inform those who want to make informed decisions about their daily lives, and those of us who enjoy pornography could always gain from AVN’s collection of information. Their site’s layout works very well visually and functionally. Finding what you want is just as easy as any other popular website and of course the quality of the content and how it’s presented is excellent. There could not be a better sponsor for the biggest pornography industry awards.
